This song is from his first studio album, Closing Time, when he still had some semblance of a more traditional singing voice, and if it doesn’t conjure images of dingy, smokey dive bars filled with three time losers, seedy hustlers and gorgeous but down on their luck femme fatales straight out of an old Humphrey Bogart movie, you’re just not trying hard enough.
